History of Westin

westin-official-retail-partner-handmade-kitchen-company

Walter Westin was the face behind the name. In 1921, Walter Westin established his electrical contracting business following his service as a merchant seaman during World War I. Shortly afterwards, Walter was joined by his two sons Derek and Cyril, who eventually joined the company, contributing significantly to its growth and evolution. Over time, Derek took charge of admin and accounting tasks, while Cyril emerged as a visionary and idea generator for the business. A pivotal moment for Westin occurred when Walter recognised his sons' inventive talents, gifting Cyril a welding kit. This gesture sparked Cyril's imagination, leading him to identify commercial applications for this technology.

From the late 1940s to the late 1970s

Westin maintained its roots as an electrical repairs business while emerging as a dominant force in fireplace surrounds and canopies. Every piece, crafted from copper, brass, or stainless steel, was meticulously handmade by a skilled workforce. The company's ethos is centred on perfection, fostering a deep sense of pride among its workforce in the craftsmanship involved in production. Before leaving the premises, each fire surround and hood had to meet the highest standards worthy of the Westin name. During the 1960s, Walter Westin 'retired' due to declining health, passing the reins to the capable hands of his two sons. In the late 1970s, the electric cooker was on the rise. As Westin managed the Fire Surrounds division of the business and continued to thrive in electrical repairs under Westin Drives Limited, a logical evolution for Fire Surrounds was to integrate filters and a motor, pivoting towards the kitchen industry.

The 1990s and the future

During the 1990s, the market experienced a gradual decline; however, new opportunities emerged with the growing demand for domestic range cookers and their specialised extraction requirements. In 1994, Cyril and Derek retired, and the business, along with Phoenix Mills home, was acquired by local businessman John Eastwood, who had longstanding ties with the company. Bringing on board his close friend to become managing director, the friends propelled the company further into the expanding market for range cookers and larger domestic extraction systems. Recognising the potential, the company embarked on a continuous investment journey over the years, improving both the premises and machinery. Today, Westin stands as a leader in kitchen extraction in the UK, collaborating regularly with prominent names in the kitchen design and interior sector. Their commitment to developing new products, harnessing innovative technologies, and nurturing the team remains as strong now as it has ever been.

Westin Cooker Hood FAQs

What is a Westin cooker hood?

A Westin cooker hood is a British-made kitchen extractor designed to remove airborne grease, fumes, smoke and odours produced during cooking. Westin has specialised in extraction from its Huddersfield base in Yorkshire since 1921, hand finishing every hood using traditional methods.

What types of Westin cooker hood are available?

The range covers wall-mounted hoods, island hoods, ceiling-mounted hoods and integrated extractor systems, so there is an option for most kitchen layouts. Popular models include the Prime and the more industrial Bloque, each also available as a dual-motor Pro version for extra power.

What is the difference between the Westin Prime and the Bloque?

The Prime is a versatile extractor designed to fit into kitchen furniture or a chimney, while the Bloque is a more robust unit with stainless steel baffle filters and a more industrial look. Both come in dual-motor Pro versions that add power and, on the Bloque Pro, extra depth and fume catchment for keen cooks.

How do I choose the right extractor for my kitchen?

The right hood depends on how you like to cook and how you plan to use the kitchen, along with your hob type, the layout and whether the hood will be wall-mounted, over an island or built into bespoke cabinetry. As an official Westin retail partner we help select and integrate the right model as part of the overall design.

Where does Handmade Kitchen Company fit Westin cooker hoods?

We design and hand-build bespoke kitchens with fully integrated Westin extraction from our workshop in Essex, for clients across Essex, Hertfordshire and North London. At Handmade Kitchen Company, we love working with respectable companies that produce the highest standards when it comes to kitchen technology and Westin is one. It is always worth

choosing your appliances as part of the design

rather than as an afterthought, so the extraction sits beautifully within your cabinetry. Contact us today for more information on this innovative product.
