It's associated with warmth, energy and positivity, making it a great choice for a room that is the heart of the home. This happy, sunny and warm hue is all the ingredients you need for a room that feels like home and makes you feel good too. From delicate cream paint for rustic vibes, zingy brights for bold modern schemes to the truest of sunshine yellows to bring a smile to any space. Whatever mood you're looking to create, Farrow & Ball have lots of different shades to suit everyone and every room of the home! In this blog, we take a look at our Wanstead project showcasing India Yellow, how it has been used to create a restful space for our client, and the alternative yellows in F&B's collection which you can add anywhere in the home.
Farrow & Ball Yellows at a Glance
Farrow & Ball's yellows run from soft creams through to strong, saturated tones. Dorset Cream is a rich double cream, Tallow a pale, light-reflecting neutral with pink and yellow pigments, and Dayroom Yellow a revitalising pale yellow for sunlit rooms. Hay is a subtle, dusty yellow with a green undertone, Citron a warm Mediterranean yellow, and India Yellow the most intense of the group, a rich mustard that turns cosy and moody alongside darker tones. At Handmade Kitchen Company we hand-paint bespoke cabinetry in any Farrow & Ball yellow.
Design ideas for using yellow in the kitchen
A few design ideas using yellow in the kitchen or open-plan space:
- Consider the natural light and size of the space. Smaller kitchens are perfect for a lighter yellow as this can make the room feel more open, while larger kitchens can handle bolder, deeper shades.
- If you aren't too sure about using yellow on all of the walls, consider just using it on an accent wall or just the kitchen cabinets, for example a kitchen island just like our client.
- Yellow is a versatile colour and pairs with plenty of colours to create a fresh and modern look.
- Incorporate yellow through accessories such as curtains, rugs, dishes or small appliances.

Dorset Cream
A luscious double cream hue is captured in the paint colour called Dorset Cream. The name evokes the image of a rich double cream produced in the heart of the West Country. A darker and more yellow version of Farrow's Cream. It is recommended to complement a soft white rather than a bright white, to create a gentle and charming colour scheme.
Dayroom Yellow
A revitalising pale yellow is embodied in the paint colour known as Dayroom Yellow. Inspired by the typical Regency colour palette, this delightfully uncomplicated shade derives its name from the sunlit rooms that were cherished during the day. This yellow hue is ideally suited for rooms blessed with abundant sunlight, infusing the space with brightness and colour, especially when paired with the crisp contrast of All White.
Tallow
This illuminating neutral comes from the natural materials originally used in candle making. The pale cream finish of Tallow superbly reflects light, making it an ideal choice for brightening a darker space or applying a consistent colour throughout a property. With a subtle infusion of pink and yellow pigments, Tallow creates a warm but fresh feel which is often very popular in nurseries.
Hay
Named after the dried crop, Hay is a subtle yellow that exudes warmth with a touch of dustiness. Hay's character is defined by a distinctly green undertone, lending it a grounded and established feel. When paired with muted Lime White woodwork, it creates tranquil spaces with a peaceful ambience.
Citron
True to its name, Citron is a warm Mediterranean yellow that radiates a vibrant intensity. It brings real warmth to compact spaces and is especially inviting across large open-plan areas.
India Yellow
India Yellow is a rich mustard yellow, the most intense of Farrow & Ball's yellows, famously named after the pigment collected from the urine of cows fed on a special diet of mango leaves! When paired with a darker tone, it produces a remarkably cosy space that defies traditional expectations of a vibrant yellow.
India Yellow in our Wanstead project
The softest touch from India Yellow was added to the kitchen island in this project. It brings a really cosy vibe to the Victorian home located in
and creates a beautiful moody and modern focal point that is the home of cooking, storage and gathering.

Farrow & Ball Yellow FAQs
What are the best Farrow & Ball yellows for a kitchen?
India Yellow is the boldest choice, a rich mustard that works beautifully on an island paired with darker tones. For something softer, Dorset Cream and Tallow give a warm, creamy finish, while Dayroom Yellow suits rooms with plenty of natural light and Hay offers a dusty, green-tinged alternative.
Does yellow work in a small kitchen?
Yes, though lighter yellows tend to work best. A pale shade such as Tallow or Dayroom Yellow reflects light and helps a compact room feel more open, whereas bolder, deeper yellows are easier to carry off in a larger kitchen or across an open-plan space.
How can I add yellow without painting the whole kitchen?
Painting just the island is the most popular approach, exactly as we did in our Wanstead project with India Yellow. You could also use it on an accent wall, on a run of cabinetry, or simply through accessories such as curtains, rugs, dishes and small appliances.
What colours go with yellow in a kitchen?
Soft whites flatter the creamier yellows, with Dorset Cream recommended alongside a soft white rather than a bright one. Dayroom Yellow is sharpened by the crisp contrast of All White, Hay sits well with muted Lime White woodwork, and India Yellow becomes cosy and moody next to a darker tone.
