We work in three-way collaboration with interior designers and their clients on a regular basis. From listed cottages in Hertfordshire to architect-led extensions in Clapham, our hand-built bespoke kitchens are designed to support the designer's vision, not compete with it. Trade enquiries are welcomed; collaboration is how we like to work.
How We Work With Interior Designers
The best bespoke kitchen projects often come from a three-way conversation: an interior designer who knows the home and the client, a homeowner with a clear sense of how they want to live, and us. We bring the workshop, the craftsmanship, the brand stack and the installation team; the designer brings the spatial vision and the wider scheme; the client brings the brief and the budget. Our job is to make that triangle work seamlessly. We hand-build every cabinet, drawer, frame and door to your specification in our Essex workshop. We work routinely with the brands designers already specify: Sub-Zero refrigeration and Wolf cooking appliances (as a UK Premier Dealer), ILVE range cookers, Armac Martin solid brass hardware, Perrin & Rowe and Quooker taps, Shaws of Darwen butler sinks, and the full Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Paint & Paper Library and Sanderson paint palettes. If you specify it, we supply, hand-paint and install it.

- Project management: our installation team are time-served joiners (not subcontractors); we coordinate with your build programme and other trades
- Per-project commercial terms: we are flexible and configure trade arrangements around each specific project rather than imposing a single model
- Geographic reach: primary install area is Essex, Hertfordshire and north London, but we travel for designer-led projects, including recent work in Surrey and Cambridgeshire

The Collaboration Process
- Initial brief: you or your client call or email Paige or Billie at Handmade Kitchen Company to introduce the project. We discuss the property, the timeline, the scope and the design intent.
- Information exchange: we receive your CAD or layout drawings, your spec sheets and any existing scheme references. We mark up cabinetry options, suggest layouts where helpful, and confirm what we can supply.
- Joint showroom visit: we host designer and client together at Bridgers Barn to see working Sub-Zero, Wolf, ILVE and Quooker installations, sample paint colours and worktop slabs, and finalise the cabinetry style.
- Detailed design and quotation: we draft the kitchen in detail, agree the specification and finishes, and provide a clear quotation. Commercial terms are agreed per project, flexible and configured to suit how you and your client want to work.
- Workshop build: typical lead time is twelve to sixteen weeks from final design sign-off. Cabinets are hand-built and hand-painted in our Essex workshop.
- Installation: fitted by our own time-served joiners, with two to three weeks on site for a typical kitchen. We coordinate with your build programme and other trades.
- Aftercare: ongoing support for snagging, replacement parts and additional cabinetry if required.

Yes, and we recommend it. Our Bridgers Barn showroom near Bishop's Stortford has working Sub-Zero refrigeration, Wolf cooking appliances, ILVE range cookers, Quooker taps and a full hand-built kitchen on display. Joint designer-and-client showroom visits are a normal part of our process; please call ahead to book.
What design support do you offer? Can you take our CAD files?
Yes. We accept CAD and layout drawings, spec sheets and scheme references. We mark up cabinetry options, draft kitchens in detail, and return options for discussion. We work to your scheme and architectural vision rather than imposing a house style on top.
Where do you install kitchens for designer-led projects?
Our primary installation area is Essex, Hertfordshire and north London. We are happy to stretch further for designer-led projects, including recent work in Surrey and Cambridgeshire. For projects outside our usual radius, we agree the logistics during the initial brief.
What is the typical lead time?
Most kitchens run twelve to sixteen weeks from final design sign-off to fitting, with installation typically two to three weeks on site. Listed properties or complex multi-room projects can take longer, and we plan dates carefully around your overall build programme.
Can we feature the completed project in our own portfolio?
Yes. We routinely agree mutual portfolio and PR rights at the start of a project so both teams can feature the completed work in their own marketing.
